The Major Drainageway Planning and Flood Hazard Area Delineation (FHAD) for Piney Creek covers approximately 12 stream miles of Piney Creek from near the intersection of East Parker Road and the Douglas/Elbert County Line to the intersection of South Parker Road and East Orchard Road near the confluence with Cherry Creek.  It also covers 4 stream miles of Antelope Creek from East Inspiration Drive to its confluence with Piney Creek at Arapahoe Road.  View a map of the Project Area here.   The local sponsors participating with the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District on this project include the City of Aurora, Douglas County, and the Southeast Metro Stormwater Authority.  Portions of unincorporated Arapahoe County and the City of Centennial are also included in the study area.

The general purposes of this study are to create an updated hydrology and hydraulic model of Piney and Antelope Creeks and to develop a preliminary design that will serve as a guide for future CIP projects for mitigation of existing and potential drainage, erosion and sedimentation, water quality, and flood hazard problems within the watershed.  It is anticipated that recommended solutions will incorporate the views of residents, land owners, and developers in addition to those of the local sponsors.  In addition to hydraulic performance, solutions will consider maintenance, stream stability, and aesthetic value.

Project Goals

· Verify the results of the Upper Piney Creek Outfall Systems Planning Report of 2003

· Update entire watershed hydrology to the latest version of CUHP and EPA SWMM with the most recent existing and future land use

· Map 100-year floodplain and identify flood hazards. Identify existing flooding, conveyance, and water quality problems within the study area

· Develop design alternatives to mitigate these problems

· Provide preliminary design of preferred alternative
